Not a Love Song

This song is not a love song or an anthem or a joke

This song is just the story of a boy and girl who spoke

Oh they were sitting on a park bench wrapped in jackets made of wool

And the sun was shining on her face which was shining on his soul

And he hadn't shaven in a week so there was stubble on his face

Although it wasn't kept so well it looked right in its place

When she slowly lifted up her hand and placed it on his chin

And his eyes filled up with wonderment and hers filled up with sin

Like crooked, blue eyed figurines

With wild mangled hair

He had patchwork on his coat and tie

And it seemed her feet were bare

Then they stared right at each other in this loving little pose

Where she was sticking out her tongue and he was sticking out his nose

Then the jest dropped off their faces and he asked how she was

And she told him, "I don't know I think I'm everything because

I kinda feel like cryin with a smile on my face

And then stomping out the hateful ones who fucked the human race

Then sipping tea by willow trees in dresses made of lace

Or just living naked on the wind that pulls me place to place."

And he said to her, "That's fine by me, but don't you think it's odd

That you came to this conclusion without government or god?"

And she snorted as she chuckled, took the world in with a sigh

And they sat there for a moment as the charlatans passed by

Like crooked, blue eyed figurines

With wild mangled hair

He had patchwork on his coat and tie

And it seemed her feet were bare

Then he kissed her on the hand for there was nothing left to say

So she kissed him on the cheek as they got up and walked away

And this song is not a love song, or an anthem, or a joke

But if you really wanted to, pretend I just misspoke

And say that it's a joke for all the cynics just like me

Because it's cliched and predictable and trite as trite can be

Or say that it's an anthem for romantics and the wise

Who are fighting off pedantics to find lovers through the lies

But don't say that it's a love song for lack of a better word

And I'll be your patchwork boy if you will be my barefoot girl
